How NOT to be an April Fool When it comes to Separation and Divorce
Second Saturday Divorce Workshops provide critical information to help curb trauma and get smart: financially, legally and emotionally.
April Fool’s day may be full of jokes but divorce is anything but funny: Take Karen C, whose husband of thirty-nine years let her know he had fallen in love with a 23-year-old Thai masseuse, and wanted Karen to stay in the marriage, retaining the title of, “Number One Wife.”
While the words sound foolish, the actions behind them were devastating. Infidelity is rampant in the US, with recent statistics bearing out that cheating is part of over 1/3rd of marriages in our country, with 22% of men and 14% of women admitting their infidelity. (1) And, while cheating doesn’t necessarily mean a marriage is going to end, it does put quite a chink in the armor of trust. It can also be a terrific wake-up call to what’s seriously wrong and right in your relationship – beginning with understanding all options, including the family finances.
In 2014, a study conducted by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center found that only 22 percent of U.S. women surveyed, compared to 38 percent of men, could answer three simple finance-related questions correctly. (2). This back-seat approach to financial literacy makes separation and divorce even more traumatic for many women.
Fears and questions abound in all areas: What about my children? Who gets the house? Where and how will I live? How will our assets be divided? What assets do we even have?
Knowledge is power, and Second Saturday Divorce Workshops have been helping tens of thousands of individuals become educated about their potentially single lives for almost thirty years. As the nation’s most trusted divorce resource, Second Saturday provides support, hope and education in the form of legal, financial and emotional information presented by a team of vetted, volunteer professionals, all passionate about helping others navigate this difficult time.
For Second Saturday co-founder Ginita Wall, “During divorce, women and men are making the most important decisions of their lives at the most vulnerable time. Our job is helping them curb the emotions and make smart decisions that will result in the best possible outcome in all areas, so they can begin their new lives with stability and confidence.”
Attendees agree: For Margie F., “I attended Second Saturday in February 2017, and it was pivotal for me: it gave so much information which helped me move forward with getting divorced, on MY TERMS. Since coming out on the other end with my pride and dignity intact, I’ve often thought about how to get the word out about Second Saturday: the workshop and resources are invaluable. Thank you so much!”
By attending a Second Saturday Divorce Workshop, there will be no April Fools when it comes to divorce, any month of the year.
